UAE astronaut Sultan Al-Niyadi made history by
speaking to Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid via video call from the
International Space Station. Sultan Al-Niyadi arrived at the space station four
days ago after a 24-hour journey from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on
the SpaceX Dragon capsule. He will spend the next six months conducting over
200 experiments, making this the Arab world's longest space mission.
Before the video call, Sheikh Mohammed bin
Rashid arrived at the eponymous space center in Dubai, and the conversation was
broadcast live by NASA TV via link-up. During the call, Sheikh Mohammed
congratulated Al-Niyadi on his safe arrival and called him an example for the
youth of the UAE and the Arab world.
The two also discussed various types of
experiments that will be conducted during the scientific mission. These
experiments include investigating how certain materials burn in microgravity,
monitoring the function of the heart, brain, and cartilage, and collecting
biological samples from outside the space station.
Sultan Al-Niyadi's mission will prepare for
the possibility of life beyond Earth's orbit as well as benefit life on Earth.
Sheikh Mohammed expressed his gratitude and excitement for the work that
Al-Niyadi will do during his time at the space station, and the importance it
holds for the future of space exploration.
