Forensic Age Estimation through X-Ray if possible?

Is it possible to accurately determine age through medical tests? X-rays of bone joints and teeth are useful, experts say. The age of any person can be ascertained from his birth certificate, identity card, or educational credentials, if the determination of someone's age becomes controversial, then the age can also be determined from X-rays of bone joints and teeth. Can the exact age be determined by medical methods or is the age determined based on mere guesses? Experts say that to determine the age of a person, age can only be estimated through X-ray and medical examination, it is not possible to accurately determine the age of any person through medical tests. In the past, in many famous cases, medical tests have been taken on the orders of the judiciary to determine the age.

Now the question is, how can a person's age be determined by a medical test? and is it an accurate age? or is the age determined by the test just by guesswork. Experts say that age can be estimated through x-rays and various physical signs, with the help of these methods, age can be estimated relatively more accurately in young people. To determine the age of the deceased, the government may constitute a medical board, which includes a general physician, forensic consultant, dentist, and radiologist.

Dr. Muhammad Kashif Shazli, head of the radiology department of Indus Hospital Karachi, told Sama Digital that if a dispute arises regarding the age of a person and the age cannot be determined from the documents, to find out the approximate age of such a person, the wrist, X-rays are taken of elbow, hip, wrist, shoulder, pelvis, and chest bone joints and age can also be estimated from the teeth of the person.

He said that with the age of a person, the edges of the bones (epiphysis) and the pulp tube (diaphysis) grow separately, with the passage of age, these parts of the bones continue to connect with each other, which is called ossification. Yes, this process is completed by about 18 years in children and adolescents in hot and humid regions.

Dr. Kashif Shazli said that some bones mature early due to weight bearing, that is, those bones that bear most of the body's weight, such as the lower torso and lumbar vertebrae, get matured quickly. He said that the bones of children from hot regions mature early, while the bones of children from cold regions mature relatively late. Along with bone X-ray, physical examination is also helpful in estimating age. Experts from forensic medicine use their expertise to determine the correct age through these methods.

Dr. Aqeel, Vice Principal of Karachi Medical and Dental College, said that dental x-rays are done to detect the age of the teeth, which is called OPG or Panoramic X-ray. Yes, the wisdom molars come out from the age of 17 to 20 years, if the wisdom molars fully erupt then it means the said boy or girl is more than 17 years old. He said that if the wisdom tooth has not come out, then it is seen in the x-ray whether the wisdom tooth is present in the bone or not and it is also seen in this bone that the root of the wisdom tooth is not complete, so it means that it has come now. Gay means the age of the child is less than 17 years.

Dr. Aqeel said that if the root of the wisdom tooth is complete but remains inside for some reason, it will not come out, but the age of this boy is above 17 years, it can be detected by X-ray and if the wisdom tooth is If it is visible in the mouth, then there is no need for X-ray, it is known through physical examination that this boy or girl is above 17 or 18 years. He said that if the wisdom tooth has not come, then it is necessary to see what position it is in, if the root is not complete, then the age is less than 17 years and if the root is complete, then it means that it is a boy or a girl. He is 17 years old.
